Construction
All Avocado Green mattresses are made to order using natural and organic materials. The standard mattress measures 80″ x 60″ x 11″ and weighs about 97 lbs. The pillow top model measures 80″ x 60″ x 13″ and weighs approximately 132 lbs. Actual sizes can vary slightly because each mattress is built by hand.
Button-Tufted By Hand
The first thing you’ll notice about the Avocado Green Mattress is its cover. The Button-Tufted design has a soft hand and classic appearance. Hand tufting the yarn secures each layer of the mattress without glues. The result is aesthetically pleasing as well as functional. Eliminating glues makes for a more responsive feel. Most bedding manufacturers use glues and adhesives that create a trampoline effect that adds unwanted motion detection. Plus, hand tufting without adhesives is more environmentally friendly. This method also reduces the appearance of irregularities in the surface of the bed by eliminating false loft. Pre Compressing the fabric results in fewer body impressions over time.
The top portion of the cover consists of GOTS certified organic cotton. It’s breathable, cool, and comfortable. OEKO-TEX certified Natural New Zealand wool is then stitched to the bottom of the cotton. For purity sake, this wool is washed with a biodegradable rinse before being added to the mattress. Wool is a natural heat regulator that keeps you cool by wicking away moisture. It also acts as a natural fire barrier.
Natural silica is also added to the cover to enhance flame resistance. Silica is a natural material found in mineral quartz and sandstone and is FDA approved for safety. The combination of natural wool and silica far exceeds federal fire safety standards. No dangerous chemical fire retardants are used. Additionally, the entire Avocado Green Mattress is GreenGuard certified. This means the mattress has met the world’s most rigorous emissions safety standard.
Natural Dunlop Latex
Avocado’s natural Dunlop latex is certified by the eco-INSTITUTE of Germany. The institute declares this bed to be free of volatile organic compounds (VOC’s). This means no formaldehyde or pesticides are present. The latex used in the Avocado Green Mattress does not come from organically certified farms. It is, however, tested for chemical emissions and purity. There is no difference in structural integrity or comfort between the two materials. For this reason, the company decided not to go the certification route. Although a prestigious designation, it’s also an expensive process. Foregoing GOLS certification allows Avocado to keep prices low and still deliver a quality mattress.
Natural Dunlop Latex is very buoyant and creates a floating sensation. That is a distinct difference from Memory Foam. You sleep on latex, not in it. Because memory foam responds to body heat, it tends to sleep on the hot side. While all foams retain a certain amount of body heat, natural latex sleeps significantly cooler than synthetic foams. The memory foam is made from petroleum products. Natural latex is produced from the sap of the rubber tree. It provides the most non-toxic, natural sleep surface available.
Ergonomic Support Coils
Avocado Green mattress uses a Leggett & Platt Quantum Edge Elite Combi-Zone coil unit. This system utilizes an 8″ individually pocketed structure that provides excellent support and spinal alignment. Because the coils are allowed to float independently, better body contouring occurs. Couples will appreciate the great motion isolation. This limits disturbance from sleep partner activity. Keeping with the company’s environmental platform, only recycled coils are used.
The innerspring is divided into three distinct comfort zones. 14 lb. Gauge coils at the head and feet and 17 lb. In the center. The middle coils are lighter but more condensed. This allows for greater conformity and pressure relief. The outside perimeter of the mattress consists of a 16 lb. border coil. This offers solid edge support while creating a full edge to edge comfort feel. It also prevents the sensation of rolling off the bed. These features are more commonly found in high priced luxury mattresses.

Heavy-Duty Handles
Side handles used to be considered a standard feature on all mattresses. This feature has become a rarity these days. To save money, most companies no longer have any handles at all. The purpose is to be able to adjust your mattress and more easily change sheets and mattress pads. We would not recommend carrying your bed by these handles. Even the heaviest handles are not meant for that kind of stress.

Sleeping on your back
Depending on your physical size or pressure sensitivities, either mattress may work for a back sleeper. A heavier person will sink in deeper into the mattress than a more petite individual. In which case, the standard may be the better choice. A smaller body type may receive a bit more pressure relief with the pillow top.
The goal is to maintain proper alignment with just enough conformity for pressure relief. That said, no one’s body is perfectly flat. Latex foam will not have as much contouring attributes as memory foam. The standard is relatively firm and maybe “too” firm for a more petite sleeper who will not be absorbed as far into this mattress. Therefore, a smaller person who sleeps on their back may opt for the pillow top version of this mattress. Either way, the difference comes down to personal comfort preference. Both of these mattresses have the same great support.
Sleeping on your side
When you sleep on your side, you minimize how much of your body is in contact with the mattress. Plus, because of the curvature of your spine, your shoulders and hips bare most of your weight. For this reason, many side sleepers will gravitate towards the pillow top version. This mattress provides a bit more body contouring. It’s worth noting natural latex has some bounce. If you are a side sleeper with pressure sensitivities, the pillow-top is the way to go.
Sleeping on your stomach
Most stomach sleepers will sleep more comfortably on Avocado’s Standard model. This position requires enough firmness to keep your back from dipping; causing lower lumbar pain. The standard offers the kind of bounce and buoyancy stomach sleepers need.
Avocado Green Mattress Pros and Cons
Pros:
- All-natural & organic material: Ideal for allergy sufferers or children vulnerable to airborne toxins.
- Superior support: Solid coil system and quality natural latex combine for outstanding body alignment.
- 25-year warranty: This warranty is more than twice as long as the industry average.
- Sleeps cool: Natural latex sleeps cooler than any synthetic foam. The organic, breathable cotton and natural wool helps to regulate body heat. Also, air passes freely through pocketed coils to help keep you cool and comfortable.
- Outstanding dollar value: Similarly, priced mattresses would cost twice as much in a retail store.
Cons:
- Limited comfort range: Both options are on the firm side.
- Latex allergies: Latex reactions are caused when a person with sensitivities comes in direct contact with the material. Organic cotton and natural wool create an adequate barrier between the latex and your skin. That said, we still recommend erring on the side of caution. If you still want an all-natural mattress, check out Avocado's new Vegan mattress; made without latex.
Who Will Like This Mattress
Those seeking superior spinal alignment and support will appreciate either model. Personal comfort preference will dictate which model you select.
If you are looking for a more natural bedding option, this mattress is worth considering. Natural latex, Organic cotton, New Zealand wool offers one of the most non-toxic sleep environments available.
Great value: While this mattress is a bit more expensive than some other options, it’s exceptional quality for the price.
Who Will Not Like This Mattress
Those seeking a very soft mattress with a lot of body hug will want to look elsewhere. Both options are on the firmer side.
If you suffer from latex or wool allergies, we recommend considering an appropriate alternative. Latex allergy reactions occur from direct contact, which should not happen on this mattress. That said, if you have concerns, choose another option for your peace of mind and safety.
Avocado Green Mattress Unboxing and Setup
Both the standard and pillow-top mattresses are quite heavy. Although one person can do the assembly by themselves, it’s much easier with a second set of hands. Once the mattress has been moved to the bedroom, remove it from the box and lay it on your foundation. Then carefully break the plastic seal; being cautious not to damage the fabric. Once the vacuum seal is broken, you will hear the sound of air passing quickly into your mattress. It will expand rapidly but still need time to decompress and aerate. Although you can lay down on your bed right away, The Avocado mattress will expand fully in a few hours.
A Queen or King should have a frame with sturdy center support and additional legs on the ground. Over time, cheaper frames can affect the support and longevity of your mattress.
