what's different about Zenhaven?

Zenhaven is a natural latex mattress produced by online giant Saatva. The parent company has quickly gained a reputation for quality great vaule and service. Saatva also manufactures their flag ship dual coil mattress as well as the Loom & Leaf memory foam bed.

What's different about Zenhaven?

The Zenhaven mattress is unique in a variety of ways. Not only is this an all Natural Latex mattress, it's produced using the Talalay method. Unlike Dunlop, Talalay takes a few extra steps to insure slightly softer, more consistent quality. It's a more expensive process, but by cutting out the middle man, Saatva has kept Zenhaven's costs in check. The retail price is less than half of what comparable retail offerings charge.

What else makes Zenhaven different is that it does not come in a box. This quality mattress will be delivered and set up in your your home at no charge. Most online companies don't offer this service. The ones that do usually charge a fee for the convenience. If you are looking for a quality natural latex mattress, you owe it to yourself to investigate Zenhaven.

Construction:

Zenhaven is a 10” all Natural Talalay Latex mattress. In order to understand the benefits this bed, you must first understand what Talalay Latex is. The word “Latex”, is simply the method of converting a liquid into a solid foam by means of a vulcanization process. Talalay, refers to the specific process used. Talalay, along with Dunlop, are the two current options used for creating latex foam. The base compound can be either 100% natural, 100% synthetic or a blend of both. Zenhaven uses all natural rubber tree sap in the production of their foam.

Talalay vs Dunlop:

Both natural Dunlop and natural Talalay start by mixing rubber tree sap in a centrifuge. The Dunlop process allows natural sediments to settle before being baked. This results in individual layers having various firmness levels. The Talalay process begins the same way but after the sap is mixed, it is vacuum sealed and flash frozen before being baked. This stabilizes the cell structure and insures better consistency of the foam. Talalay is also slightly softer than Dunlop.

Both natural Dunlop and natural Talalay utilize a vulcanization that starts by mixing natural rubber tree sap in a centrifuge. During the Dunlop process, sediments are allowed to settle before being baked. This results in individual layers having varying firmness levels.  The Talalay process begins the same way but after the sap is mixed, it is vacuum sealed and flash frozen before being baked. This stabilizes the cell structure and insures better consistency of the foam. Talalay is also slightly softer than Dunlop. Because of the added cost of additional processing, Talalay mattresses are typically more expensive than Dunlop.

It's important to note, Although "natural" latex starts with 100% natural rubber tree sap, no final latex product is 100% natural. A small percentage of chemical additives are included in the mix to aid in the vulcanization process. To qualify as natural, a mattress must not contain no more than 5% of these compounds. Zenhaven is a natural talalay latex mattress.

Talalay Latex:

Layered construction creates two firmness options in one mattress

Zenhaven mattress review

Top Layer - The top layer consists of a 1.5" of Talalay latex. This layer is constructed with a 5 zone comfort layer that provides support where you need it most.

Second Layer - This 3" layer of talalay latex is designed for support and pressure relief. The addition of this layer allows for more body hug and conformity.

Third layer - The third  3" layer of talalay latex is a bit firmer and serves a dual purpose. It acts as a transition from the softer first two layers when top layer (plush side) is facing up. When bottom (firm side) is up, this layer adds additional structure and support.

Forth layer - The forth layer serves as the top of the firm side. This layer adds 1.5" more of firmer talalay latex that offers less body hug and softness. It also acts as the base for the plush side.

Where is Zenhaven's latex made?

Zenhaven acquires it's talalay latex from Talalay Global (formerly Latex International). Located in Shelton, CT, Talalay Global has established itself as one of the premier latex distributors in the world. All latex sold by this company meet Oeko-Tex certified as Class I. Certification verifies Latex is free from harmful substances. This foam is even safe for babies. No detail is too small to deserve attention. Even adhesives are water-based and free of solvents.

What if you have a latex allergy?

Latex allergies are very rare and are only problematic from direct contact. The cover provides a safe barrier between your skin and the surface of the latex. That said, would till recommend erring on the side of caution. If you have a known latex allergy we suggest choosing a different mattress for you piece of mind and safety.

How does natural talalay latex compare to memory foam?

Natural talalay latex is far more buoyant and resilient than memory foam. Memory foam is much slower to respond and creates more of a sinking in feeling. Unlike memory foam, natural talalay latex has no off-gassing issues and sleeps much cooler.

Cover:

Zenhaven's cover is a combination of Organic Cotton and 100% Joma Wool. The cotton provides a soft breathable sleep surface that's cool and comfortable. Joma Wool is a natural heat regulator that draws heat away from your body while you sleep.  This same quality cover is duplicated on both sides of the mattress. It's an added feature that assures consistency, regardless of comfort preference.

What if you have a wool allergy?

Although extremely rare, there is a small percentage of the population that have wool allergies. The wool in Zenhaven's mattress is certified organic and thoroughly washed out before it is used. Lanolin, a natural grease in wool, causes most rare wool allergies. All Lanolin is washed out making the Zenhaven mattress safe to sleep on.

Does Zenhaven use chemical fire retardants?

No dangerous chemical fire retardants are used in production of Zenhaven mattress. Joma wool acts as a natural fire barrier and meets all federal standards for fire safety.

Comfort Options:

Luxury Plush Side: The is the best option for side sleepers seeking a bit more conformity and hug for the shoulders and hips. Even though it is the softer of the two options, it retains it's resiliency and bounce. The Luxury Plush offers great pressure relief while remaining quite buoyant. It's designed to create a sensation of floating on top of the mattress; apposed to being engulfed by it.

Gentle Firm Side: This mattress is typically an ideal for most back and stomach sleepers. Soft enough to lessen pressure points but firm enough to maintain proper alignment. You'll get less body hug and a more structured feel.
